Michael “Mike” Russell

James Michael "Mike" Russell, born on December 30, 1956, passed away on June 4, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Mike was the son of James Wesley Russell and Alma Lea (Johnston) Russell. 

He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed deer and turkey hunting, coon chases, trapping, and fishing. Mike also took great pride in his work as a logger and was known for his strong work ethic and love of the woods. He enjoyed spending time outdoors and sharing those experiences with family. 

Mike is survived by his children, Tonya Hulbert and husband, Scott, and James Jeremy Russell and wife, Ashley; his grandchildren, Sydney Beistel and husband, Tanner, Tyler Russell, Shae Hulbert, Ethan Hulbert and wife, Julie, and Jessie Russell; his great-grandson, Bentley; his sisters, Margaret Cristelle “Cris” Stanfill, Cynthia Lea Martin and husband, Sean; brotherin-law, Richard McDonald; and several nieces and nephews. 

In addition to his parents, James and Alma Lea Russell, Mike was preceded in death by his sister, Charlotte McDonald, and brother-in-law, Terry Stanfill. 

Mike was affectionately known by his friends and the community as Turtle. Although not always easy to “carve out a living”, Mike chose Shannon County as his home and would rarely venture too far. He will be deeply missed by family and friends, but they will carry memories of shared hunts, fish fries on the riverbank after a late-night gig, and stories of big bucks and the ones that got away for many years to come. 

Graveside services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 8, 2026, at Mount Zion Cemetery, Winona, Missouri, under the direction of Yarber Mortuary, Winona. Condolences may be expressed at www.yarbermortuary.com
